My roommate just offered me food.

And like, he's a good guy and I bet his food is good, but I don't want to share his food. I have a thing sometimes about not sharing food.

What is the most respectful way I could have rejected my roommate's food?

I would think that your roommate would just take the simple no at face value, but I can see that it is possible that he'll read dislike into it. But I think that's unlikely!

If you're more worried about establishing a permanent understanding about, you know, not sharing food, you could say something like, "I'd prefer it if we did our own groceries / each looked after our own food (or feeding ourselves) -- it's nothing personal, it'd just work better for me...."

The war against awkwardness is so dreadfully persistent. Glad I could help.
